Shakespearean Comedy;

A Midsummer Night's Dream

 Love

Have you ever heard of the saying, “Love is blind,” or maybe the phrase, “The course of true love never did run smooth,”

Shakespeare, ever the literary genius, was the one to introduce those phrases to us. With his quick and witty language, he strung those words together; words that held truth, yet opened our eyes to the irony of it all. Love is supposed to be a good thing, right?

A great wizard once said, “Pity the living, and above all, pity those who live without love.”

Ten points to whoever can tell me who that wizard was..?

But anyway, this play made me wonder if we should pity those who do love, rather than those who don’t. Yes, it’s sort of... morbid, but think about it; think about all the stress you go through for that one person, think about the constant worrying and insecurities, think about the drama and the fights and the consequences, think about it all. Wouldn’t it just be easier to... not love?
Of course, knowing that the person you love loves you back is reward enough, but still. It’s pretty stressful, but it's worth it, right?

Love, my friends, is a complicated emotion; it can be mainuplated, it can be faked, it can be confused with other emtions such as lust, but it can also be the most real and raw emotion you'll ever feel, and this is what Shakespeare managed to show us in his plays.

Using certain comedic conventions and ideas, several different plot lines and a range of very interesting characters, he wrote a whole play about the hardships, foolishness, uncertainty and obstacles of love; A Midsummer Night’s Dream is an old favourite that can be interpreted in many different ways, as could his many other works.

Seen them all? Great!
